Return to the genesis of 16-bit gaming with Ancient’s brand new shoot ’em up, Earthion!

Talk about Earthion had been rumbling on the internet from early 2023, and at Tokyo Game Show 23 I was lucky enough to be backstage at Yuzo Koshiro’s first public showing of the Sega Mega Drive STG Earthion.

As a Mega Drive collector, I was ecstatic, and eagerly started pestering the game’s Producer Alex Aniel, for an opportunity to work with LRG, SDX and Ancient to create a site for the game’s launch. It paid off!

I requested as many bitmap graphic assets as possible from the programmer Wado-san, and recreated some of the scene’s from the game with the small pixel based images, adding motion to mimic cut-scenes and give the visitor a real retro feel for the game.

With the Mega Drive being massive in Brazil, as well as across Europe, we added a custom built multi-lingual switcher – made for long form pages like this – to enable us to reach all audiences, and keep the process of adding multilingual content as simple as possible.

I’m really pleased with how the site turned out, it’s captured that glorious age of 16-bit graphics.

The game is also the best shmup on the Mega Drive, in my honest opinion!
